Corpus Christi celebrations in Pizarra

THE festivities for Corpus Christi were held in Pizarra last Sunday, attracting dozens of people who admired the altars set up by local brotherhoods, and children who are receiving Holy Communion this year joined the local priest in his prayers.

The procession left the Iglesia San Pedro Apostol and visited Calle San Pedro, Plaza del Ayuntamiento, Calle Alora, Avenida de la Fuensanta, Calle Rodríguez Acosta, Calle Dehesa, Calle Ermita, Calle Real and Plaza de la Iglesia before returning to the church. The Corpus Christi processions have been held in Pizarra since 1531, and were originally organised by the Santisimo Sacramento (Holy Sacrament) Brotherhood, which ceased to exist in the nineteenth century. Nowadays it is organised by the local church.

Corpus Christi is a Catholic festival held to celebrate     the Eucharist. The main aim is to proclaim and promote faith in the Catholic Church and in Jesus. It is held on the Thursday following the eighth Sunday after Easter Sunday and celebrations include the holy host presented in a procession.
