65 illegal immigrants intercepted off Almería coast
A group of 65 illegal immigrants arrived at Almería port last night after the small fishing boat they were travelling in was intercepted off the coast of Almería near the island of Alborán. The president of the Red Cross branch in Almería, Carlos Jover, explained that his volunteers had been treating the immigrants, who were travelling in very cramped conditions- "like sardines in a tin" -which intensified the effects of their long hard journey.
None of the illegal immigrants, which included four women and around a dozen minors, had passports or any other form of identification, and it is not yet known which countries they are from.
The small fishing boat was first spotted yesterday morning, and by 1pm, a Coast Guard patrol boat had pulled up alongside. Medical staff gave first aid to the most seriously affected on the island of Alborán, before they were taken ashore under the supervision of Maritime Guardia Civil officers.
