As part of Gibraltar’s celebrations of its 300th year of Anglo/British sovereignty, local finance centre company Sovereign Trust (Gibraltar) Ltd is holding an exhibition of paintings of the Rock specially commissioned by them from Catalonian artist Jordi Fulla.
There are already many paintings of Gibraltar’s distinctive profile, but Jordi Fulla’s large acrylic works are unique in their approach to the subject, showing the traditional shape in light settings that give the subject a set of new looks. As well as the Rock in silhouette from various angles there are also some works that are based on satellite views of Gibraltar, Spain and Morocco. These paintings are almost trompe l’oeil, it being hard to believe that the startling relief appearance is in fact smooth and flat when the painting is touched.
Jordi Fulla said, “I visited Gibraltar for the first time last year and took away with me many sensations, all of which make Gibraltar a place with a very poetic strangeness, a place for introspection but from a panoramic viewpoint.”
Howard Bilton, chairman of The Sovereign Group, told SUR in English, “Despite being owned and managed by non-Gibraltarians, our group is firmly committed to Gibraltar and, as the employer of over forty staff, our office here is now our largest administrative operation.”
The exhibition, in Sovereign’s offices at 143 Main Street, was opened by the Chief Minister and was also attended by HM the Governor.
