EXCAVATIONS to facilitate the construction of six storeys of flats and commercial premises, plus three floors of underground parking, beside the main road in Competa Village, Avenida de la Constitucion, caused the road to completely collapse on Saturday May 17.
The road has been closed to all traffic and pedestrians and diversions into the village are in operation.
Some weeks earlier, a secondary road, on the northern perimeter of the construction site, also collapsed and has since been closed to traffic.
The excavations, which began last November and are ongoing, involve the removal of thousands of tons of earth, which has caused some land-slippage.
A number of private properties surrounding the site have suffered serious damage with large cracks opening up in some walls. Local residents are shocked and angered by the situation and are demanding to know why the work was allowed to go ahead. |
