The Junta de Andalucía has begun the procedure to withdraw town planning responsibility from Marbella Town Hall.
The Junta’s president, Manuel Chaves, announced the move at the end of November, saying that the regional government would begin the procedure after the approval of the new Andaluz Land Law, then estimated for 12th December.
Chaves argued that the current local government, and previous Councils led by Jesús Gil y Gil and Julián Muñoz, had failed to comply with town planning regulations and had ignored any court rulings against building projects.
The local Council will have the power to grant planning permission, but approval must be in line with Marbella’s new local development plan, which is currently under revision.
The Junta will now have total control over the Plan.
There are press reports today that Marbella’s current mayor, Marisol Yagüe, has ignored more than 300 orders to stop building on sites across the municipality.
