The company Copasur, which was making improvements to the Avenida Jacinto Benavente in Marbella until Thursday of last week, has now stopped work as it has not been paid by the Town Hall. But that is not all. It is also suing the Mayor, Marisol Yagüe, personally, alleging that she owes almost a million euros for renovations to her own home. The matter was reported to the court last Monday and the company is claiming 950,000 euros, plus interest, expenses, court costs for the work itself and the materials used, which, according to the Partido Popular, were bought by Copasur. Apparently the cost of the materials alone came to around 582,000 euros, 60 per cent of the total.
Ángeles Muñoz, councillor and spokeswoman for the PP, explained that from the start of the work on the road in the summer of 2004 until August 2005 numerous attempts had been made to reach a satisfactory agreement with the company but they had all failed. Muñoz added that she had urged the Mayor to provide an explanation immediately “if she didn’t want the citizens of Marbella and San Pedro to suspect that her aim was to send the bill for the work on her home to the Town Hall”, said Muñoz. The Mayor was indignant at the PP for mixing council affairs with her personal ones and insisted that if she had had no intention of paying she “wouldn’t have organised an agreement.” She also pointed out that Copasur won the contract for work on the road when it was put out to tender.
