The summer avalanche of tourists is starting to hit the Costa del Sol and shops and businesses in coastal resorts are rubbing their hands together at the prospect of the busiest time of the year. As from the beginning of this month traders in Marbella, Fuengirola, Benalmádena, Torremolinos, Estepona, Nerja, Rincón de la Victoria and Manilva are able to open their doors seven days a week in order to make the most of the summer season.
These eight municipalities have been given permission by the Junta de Andalucía to open their shops every day, including Sundays and public holidays, from July 1st to September 15th. Meanwhile the regional government is currently processing the application made by Mijas to join this list of holiday resorts, officially known as areas of great tourist affluence, in order to extend trading hours there as well.
The opening hours affect large stores and shopping centres (expected to be visited by some 50,000 people on a typical Sunday in summer) as well as smaller more traditional businesses which will also be taking advantage of the extended opening hours to attract more holiday customers. However not all of the smaller businesses take up the opportunity to open all hours, but normally only those closest to marinas, hotels and other tourist areas. |
